We will start presentations at about 6:0pm but come over starting from 5:30pm and make the most of talking to your fellow SOM members, grab hot pizza and a cold drink. Make sure you are not late - there are great presentations this evening...
Sydney Oracle Meetup #2 has the new sponsor -- Hotsos will make pizza and beer taste better:
"Hotsos is a software company dedicated to business optimization. We are thought leaders in Oracle performance, providing innovative software, education, and services world-wide. Our reputation for rapid and permanent client success spans from small companies through the Fortune 100."
I have to schedule this meetup on Friday because that's the only time when we have a chance to host one of the greatest Oracle performance experts. Fellow member of OakTable Network, Oracle ACE Director and one of the first Oracle Certified Masters in the world -- Tanel Poder.
As part of his "world-wide tour", Tanel is coming to Sydney from Singapore to do his exceptional seminar for Oracle University - Advanced Oracle Troubleshooting for DBAs and Performance Engineers. If you are not one of those lucky attendees, you will have a chance to see a masterpiece from Tanel at the SOM and seek help in the most complex performance challenges you've had. The topic hasn't been confirmed yet but trust me - everything from Tanel is a masterpiece! Perhaps, we will even do an adhoc session on the whiteboard - nothing more exciting! Stay tuned...
But that's not all. We will have another great world-class presenter that evening and it's a guest from Dallas, Texas, USA -- Ric Van Dyke of Hotsos. It's impossible that you didn't head about the #1 Oracle performance conference in the world - Hotsos Symposium. Ric is a trainer for Hotsos and a regular presenter at Hotsos Symposium as well as other conferences. He started working with Oracle back in the days of version 6. Ric worked for Oracle for 10 years as instructor and technical manager in the Advanced Technology Services consulting group. Again, we are very lucky to have this opportunity to host Ric at the SOM as he is coming from the states for few weeks to visit this beautiful country (he doesn't know that most people coming to Australia for few weeks are staying here for the whole life).
As usual, we should have interesting informal discussions and, of course, some food and beverages to make us relaxed after working week and tuned on the informal networking with fellow Oracle database professionals.
* 5:30pm - Pizza, beer & your peers
* 6:00pm - Ric Van Dyke - "How to tune SQL with Extended Trace Data"
* 7:00pm - Tanel Poder - "Zero Slides: The Scripts and Tools which Will Make Your Life Easier and Allow You to Troubleshoot Better"
* 8:00pm - 8:30pm - closing and follow up discussions
* 8:30pm - ... (optional) trip to the pub - it's Friday night!
Ric Van Dyke - How to tune SQL with Extended Trace Data
This presentation will focus on how to use the data collected by event 10046 (Extended Trace Data) to tune a SQL statement. Using the STAT lines of the trace data, you will be able to see which parts of the SQL statement are consuming the most time and will then be able to focus your efforts on the parts of the statement that need to be fixed. Also, the WAIT lines will be discussed so that you will know if there is something else besides the SQL that needs your attention.
Tanel Poder -- Zero Slides: The Scripts and Tools which Will Make Your Life Easier and Allow You to Troubleshoot Better
As the title already says, this presentation has no slides at all. Instead, Tanel will demonstrate some of the most useful tools he uses for accurate Oracle performance troubleshooting. The toolset ranges from plain SQL statements to Unix and Dtrace scripts and some custom-built GUI tools.
During the session you will be taken through few troubleshooting case studies following a systematic troubleshooting methodology. For anyone interested in Oracle internals and performance tuning, this session should be a fun learning exercise!
